Rhythm in the Hospital: John R Beck and Versa Tubanos and the Bahia Buffalo Drum
For the past 18 months I have been involved in a hospital research study using group drumming with stem cell transplant recipients. We play Versa Tubanos with Comfort Sound Heads in the patient's hospital room to help reduce stress, anxiety, and pain, and hopefully improve mood and relaxation. If a patient doesn’t feel well enough to sit up in a chair we suggest that they take the Tubano head off and play it resting on their stomach, or we introduce them to the Buffalo Drum, which always brings a smile the first time they strike it and feel the deep vibration. The Buffalo Drum is also a wonderful tool in pediatric behavioral health drum circles for young patients to use leading call and response with the group.
