When you blend rhythm, improvisation, melody, harmony, social-emotional learning, drum circle facilitation -- and combine it with a group of teachers, psychologists, and social workers -- you get Dr. James Oshinsky’s newest endeavor.
Recently, Dr. Oshinsky’s journey took an exciting turn. After many years of working with school districts on Long Island, and with a strong reputation for his extensive experience and connection with students, he was approached by a district’s Music Director to create a new program. When Dr. Oshinsky asked whether the Director wanted a sampler experience or to “Go Deep!”, the Music Director enthusiastically replied, “Go Deep!”
With unprecedented vision, Dr. Oshinsky designed a six-session program, meeting monthly to bring together music teachers, art teachers, social workers, and psychologists in training that promotes both musicianship and social skills. This innovative program seeds the district with the goal of having multiple staff members able to implement large and small group improvisation activities.
The journey began with group drumming, emphasizing body language and the mindset of drum circle facilitation. Gradually, the program transitioned to include voice and instruments, recognizing the increased vulnerability, risk, and trust involved in melodic improvisation.
The results have been overwhelmingly positive. Music staff appreciated the large group activities that translate well into general music classes, band, orchestra, and chorus. Meanwhile, counselors found value in smaller group activities that support social development, allowing students to take on roles such as attentive listening, supportive playing, or solo expression.
With 50 school districts in Dr. Oshinsky’s county, interest is growing, and some have already inquired about bringing a similar program to their schools.
Starting with the philosophy of facilitating a drum circle, masterful musicians, art teachers, music teachers, psychologists, and social workers create a symphony of inclusion and connection with today's youth.
As the late Remo Belli deeply believed, this path offers tremendous value for both musicians and non-musicians who feel called to serve others, even if they do not resonate with performance or show business.
Find your calling within the Arts! We need you! They need you!
