Bill Shaltis is the Assistant Professor of Percussion at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis, and Principal Timpani of the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra and New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra. Prior to these appointments, Shaltis was Principal Percussion/Assistant Timpani of the Evansville Philharmonic and Owensboro Symphony.

Shaltis has performed with the Kansas City, Utah, Portland (ME), Lansing, Jackson (MI), and Detroit Civic Symphonies, as well as Boston Baroque, Handel & Haydn Society, Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Musica Viva, Granite State Opera, and Orchestra Kentucky. Shaltis has performed timpani concerti with the Boise Philharmonic, Evansville Philharmonic, University of Evansville, and Jackson Concert Band.

Shaltis is a sought-after clinician and performer throughout North America, Europe, and China. Notable performances include the Aspen and Atlantic Music Festivals, the 1st International Timpani Competition in Paris, and the Beijing Modern Music Festival in China. He has performed and presented at several PASIC’s and the NAfME and Midwest International Conferences. In addition, Shaltis created the video podcast series Good Beats (available on iTunes) and The Solo Timpanist.

An advocate of chamber music, Shaltis co-founded the First Tuesdays faculty chamber music series at the University of Evansville, co-founded the percussion trio Drei Schellen and is a member of the Verde Percussion Group in Boise. Notable composer collaborations include Michael Daugherty, George Tsontakis, Narong Prangcharoen, Andrew Thomas, Lowell Liebermann, Jim Cockey, Michael Miller, and Chad Rehmann. A diverse percussionist, Shaltis has performed with the Kansas City Chiefs Drumline, Royal Thunder Drumline, Marimba Sol de Chiapas, the New England Mehterhane Janissary Band, the Capitol City and Bend in the River Brass Bands, and the John Hussmann Trio. He can be heard on commercial recordings with Michigan State University, percussionist Andrew Beall, composer Patrick Chan, and the premiere recording of Chen Yi's Ba Yin with the PRISM saxophone quartet.

Shaltis previously taught at Missouri Southern State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he was awarded the Muriel Kauffman Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. Prior to Kansas City, he was the Consortium Instructor of Percussion at the University of Evansville. Other notable appointments included serving on the faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp, the Wesley Shepard Honor Band, and co-creating the award-winning Drum Club for at-risk youths in the Evansville area.

Shaltis received his DMA from UMKC, MM from the Boston Conservatory, and BM from Michigan State University.
