Anthony J. Cirone, Percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony from 1965 to 2001, performed under the batons of Josef Krips, Seiji Ozawa, Edo DeWaart, Herbert Blomstedt, Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Eugene Ormandy, Kurt Mazur, Rafael Kubelik and James Levine.
He was Professor of Music at San José State University from 1965 to 2001 where he conducted the Percussion Ensemble and developed the Manuscript Preparation/Computer Engraving class. He also taught at Stanford University from 1983 to 1992 and was Professor of Music and Chair of the Jacobs School of Music Percussion Department at Indiana University from 2001 to 2007.
Mr. Cirone has over 115 published titles including 3 symphonies for percussion, 4 sonatas, a string quartet, orchestral works, and textbooks. His book, Portraits in Rhythm for Snare Drum, is used worldwide for training percussionists. His recent publication, The Great American Symphony Orchestra – A Behind the Scenes Look at its Artistry, Passion, and Heartache, has received high acclaim.
His latest publication is The Evolving Legacy of Portraits in Rhythm where he gives new life to the interpretation of the etudes in Portraits in Rhythm after a 36 year career with the San Francisco Symphony and 42 years as a University Professor.
In 1999, he received a Special Distinction Award from ASCAP for his PentadicStriations for Orchestra. He is Executive Percussion Editor for Meredith Music Publications, also a published author for Alfred Music, and a clinician for Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company, the Yamaha Corporation, and Remo Inc.
