ANATOMY OF A CONGA DRUM
Conga drums have been made uniquely for decades so there are many drum shapes, counter hoops, and head variations. This can make changing your conga drumhead a bit of a guessing game! Here's the lowdown on the most common things that might trip you up:
- Not all drums are created equal: Different brands and even different models within the same brand can have variations in size, counter hoop styles, and tuning hardware. So, just because your conga drum is a specific size doesn't guarantee any drumhead will fit perfectly.
- Tuning Hardware: Sometimes, the tuning hooks might be too short or long for your conga drum, making it hard to properly tighten the head. Additionally, some counter hoops require you to assemble the head and hooks together before putting them on the drum, which adds another layer of complexity.
- Collar Considerations: The collar is the part of the drumhead that sits on the edge of the drum. Sometimes, it might not sit flat or might even move around before you tighten it. Don't worry! When you crank up the tension, the collar will usually form to the drum shape and stay put.
- Drum Size isn't everything: While knowing the size of your conga drum can be helpful, it's not the most important factor for choosing a conga drumhead. Instead, focus on measuring the counter hoop (the metal ring that holds the head on) to ensure a good fit. This is especially important for older or unknown brand drums.
