The inaugural recipient of the John Pochée Momentum Award (2025), he is best known for his performances with Ten Part Invention, his leadership of The Boundless Ensemble, and his educational platform Boundless Drumming.
Across more than two decades as one of Australia’s most distinctive drummers, Rease has performed with artists including Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Bernie McGann, James Morrison, Don Burrows, Vince Jones, and Mike Nock. His performances at national and international festivals — from Sydney and Melbourne to Tokyo and Beijing — reveal a voice deeply rooted in jazz tradition while continually expanding its creative horizon.
Recent highlights include recording with Ten Part Invention for ABC Jazz in 2025 (album release and national live-to-air broadcast scheduled for 2026) and performing at the Inner West Drum Fest, where he received the Momentum Award for his contribution to Australian drumming and creative innovation.
As an educator, Rease is the founder of Boundless Drumming, a pedagogy dedicated to cultivating creative independence and embodied musicianship through rhythm, awareness, and artistic process. He teaches across multiple programs and maintains a private studio in Sydney, Australia.
Rease holds a PhD in Jazz Drumset Performance Studies from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with mentorship from Billy Hart, Jim Chapin, Gordy Knudtson, and Chad Wackerman, among others.
