Dr. Andrew Lynge is currently the Director of Percussion Studies at The University of Alabama. At The University of Alabama he directs The University of Alabama Percussion Ensemble, winner of the 2020 Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition, instructs the percussion methods course, and teaches applied lessons. He was the Assistant Professor of Percussion at Jacksonville State University from 2017 - 2019.
As an international percussionist, Dr. Lynge has performed and presented clinics in Brazil, Italy, Argentina, and at various PASIC conventions. He was a featured artist at both the 16th and 18th International Patagonia Percussion Festivals in General Roca, Argentina, the 2019 and 2021 World Percussion Movement in Bari, Italy, the 2019 Percussion Seminar at Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Brazil, and is looking forward to visits to Hong Kong, Chili, Thailand, and Argentina for the upcoming 2021/2022 season. A recent clinic tour through Italy included presentations and masterclasses at Conservatorio Superiore di Musica, Acquaviva delle Fonti, Conservatorio di Matera, Conservatorio di Cesena, and Liceo Musicale Ancona. Dr. Lynge is a founding member of Epoch Percussion, who have gained a national reputation as concerti soloists with the top wind bands throughout the country. Epoch Percussion were featured soloists with the Dallas Winds, the World Youth Wind Symphony at the Interlochen Arts Camp, and The University of Texas Wind Ensemble with a performance of the percussion concerto Invisible Cities by Dinuk Wijeratne. Epoch Percussion also had the pleasure to perform Re(new)al, a percussion concerto by composer Viet Cuong, with the Dallas Winds, The University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble, as well at The University of Alabama Wind Ensemble at the 2020 American Bandmasters Association Convention. Epoch Percussion is looking forward to their upcoming 2021/2022 season with a performance of Re(new)al with the Dallas Winds on two occasions: at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, TX and at the 2021 Midwest Clinic.
Having performed at many Percussive Arts Society International Conventions, in 2016 Dr. Lynge performed as a soloist with the I.P.E.C. winner Lone Star High School with a performance of Keiko Abe's Reflections on Japanese Children's Songs III.
An avid proponent of new music, Dr. Lynge has commissioned works for solo percussion. An Assembly of Outrage by Caleb Pickering is a solo for snare drum with audio accompaniment that addresses the political climate of modern day. Specializing in 6-mallet keyboard percussion, Dr. Lynge commissioned the vibraphone solo titled Sunyata by composer Samuel Peruzzolo-Vieira. This vibraphone solo beautifully explores the possibilities of utilizing six mallets on the vibraphone. A recent commission includes a work by Russell Wharton that explores the use of solo percussion with both video and audio accompaniment. This unique, multi-movement work is titled, Kingdoms.
With a strong history in marching percussion, Dr. Lynge taught The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps (2016-2019) and the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (2012-2014). He was a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from 2008 (DCI Champions-Fred E. Sanford High Percussion Award)-2009.
Dr. Lynge earned degrees from Texas A&M University-Commerce (B.M.), Colorado State University (M.M.), and The University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A.).
