Remo, Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of percussion instruments, maintains a very strong waste reduction and recycling program. In 2009, with the help of a waste management consultant, Industrial Recycling Services, Inc. (IRSI), Remo, Inc. was able to recycle various scrap materials amounting to 368 tons from a total waste stream of 561 tons, achieving a 66 percent recycling rate. Materials that Remo Inc. was able to recycle included plastics, aluminum, cellulose fiber materials, and shipping materials. The recycled materials contributed $33,109 to the company’s bottom line, including $22,955 in reduced waste hauling and landfill disposal fees and $10,154 in income from the recycled products. The diverted waste saved the equivalent of 646 cubic yards of landfill space. The recycled materials saved the equivalent of 3,162 barrels of oil, 18.6 billion BTUs of energy, 1.03 million gallons of water, more than 2,500 trees, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 796 tons of carbon dioxide.
