The workshop begins with a taiko demonstration followed by a short presentation of the history and background of taiko in Japan and North America. Students will be taught the basics of playing the taiko using a simple martial arts and zen technique taught by Kurai sensei (teacher). Traditional festival Japanese rhythms and ancient sacred Buddhist drumming will also be demonstrated.

Taiko is a powerfully visual performing art that can provide musical, physical and spiritual training and discipline as well as being fun for the entire family. Tom Kurai is a Zen Buddhist priest and taiko artist who has over 30 years of experience as a performer and teacher. Workshop is open to anyone from age 12 to adult.
