Paulo Mattioli, our dear friend and partner in the world of drumming and drum circles, passed away on October 22, 2011 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Paulo contributed to the community on many levels and for many years. As a world-renowned multi-percussionist, he performed with superstars Kenny Loggins, Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Hart, and Babatunde Olatunji. As an educator he created videos, taught workshops and developed DVDs on West African drumming. As a Remo artist and supporter he helped to create the Remo Paulo Mattioli Signature Djembe and Dun Duns. Paulo was also the founder of Rhythm Journey, Rhythm Ranch, Fit Rhythms and innovative exercise program using drumming and rhythm.

Paulo held a bachelor's degree in music, communications and visual arts from the University of San Diego where he graduated with honors and received a U.S. scholarship for his groundbreaking research in the use of drumming for communication within West African Culture.

Paulo’s contributions will be appreciated by many for years to come and his absence is deeply felt. His condition did not stop him from attending the annual NAMM drum circle in January of 2011 in Anaheim, California, sharing with the community how much healing he received by playing his drum throughout his treatment; tribute to his commitment to the benefits of drumming, rhythm and his generosity.

Thank you Paulo, for all you the gifts you have given.
