I facilitated a program to thirty residents in a long-term care facility. I followed the HealthRHYTHMS protocol. I could not do "Shaker Share" since the majority of the residents are hearing impaired and couldn't hear the shakers--something I discovered after I distributed the "apples." . I quickly changed my plans and did "Sound Shape Share." Same idea, different instruments. Worked well.
The residents were very receptive to the wellness exercises.
I was happy to see the participation increase as the evening wore on. Three gentlemen, sitting in the back row, all playing metal, developed an amazingly pleasing song. I, stopped cut the rest of the group and let them play for the rest of us. When they finished the residents broke into applause. This was a great moment to see them recognized for their "in the moment" music.
This was my first time doing the HealthRHYTHMS protocol and working in a healthcare facility. I followed my protocol card which was always within sight. (What a helpful tool! Thank you) I found it quite satisfying to work with this population and I am now scheduled to facilitate there next month.
