I think I've asked this here before..sorry I don't go to other drum forums anymore. Does anybody use one of these? does it work? CAN it work? I don't see how. But I'm intrigued. Heard good things, and a few bad things..of course, some guys know what's up, and some other guys can't tie their own shoes. Does it fit in an Emad or Regulator pre cut hole? Inquiring minds want to know. Maybe not $40 worth

I know a drummer who uses a Kickport and swears that it totally changed his sound from good to incredible. Not having heard the drum before the Kickport was added, I had to just take his word for it. I don't have forty bucks to try one and I don't feel convinced that I need one. I see that it's supposed to have a 4" diameter opening. However, it looks like the EMAD has a 5" hole and the Regulator has a 7" hole in the center. My guess is that there may be a way to fix it into the Evans head but not the Aquarian. They require a 5" to 5.5" hole, 5.25" is recommended. Go to; www.kickport.com/ Click on PDF file about head recommendations under Products. I think it helps a little for a fatter low end sound, I'm still not so sure it worth the 35.00 or 40.00. I feel anytime you add anything or cut a hole in a drum head you reduce the over all resonance of that head. Although it is nice to to have a hole if a sound man happens to be at a venue that requires mic's. So I'm guessing the Kickport is projecting internal tones that do not normally exit the drum. Like the bell on a horn, it projects that sound to maybe a greater distance???? sherm K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple System

Tried it, wasn't convinced it did anything to improve the sound of MY kick. Anything you put on a head muffles it. So it may "enhance" low end simply by serving as a muffling agent. Yeah I have read the literature and seen the videos. I see some people using it. Hesitant to pull the trigger for $40 worth. Would be great if it could be removed and re-installed. Doesn't look like it can do that. My kits all have Regulator front heads, so it would be cool if it like, snapped off and on. What I think it does is enhance near field low end a little. What I hear is guys saying they get more ooomph from behind the kit (which is cool, but not essential) or on a closely placed mic. The price is somewhat prohibitive

The price is somewhat prohibitive I think you're right - and 'Near Field' is the key. I tried the Remo PowerSonic and toyed with Ported and unported Reso to see which would please me the most. I believe the PS head enhanced the low-end shell resonance (which doesn't come through on their marketing video to the same degree it showed up on my Kick). But I left off all the attack enhancing stuff (Falam Slam patch and the ESDS pad) and I play with the Felt side of my three-sided beater. I thought the purchase of the PS was useful since I had to buy a head anyway. So there might be something to the claim of the Kickport perhaps not generating lower frequencies, but enabling more of the lows that are there to come through. However, as mentioned above, I also think some heads do that. I think the overriding truth to it is that it's what Money said: a Near Field effect. I talked with Paul Mason of Tempus drums through facebook, as he had a photo of one of his Tempi at Musicmesse with a kickport. He said it definitely changed the character of the (18") bass drum. I'll post results when I get it. Here's Paul's sweet kit, and what he said. Paul is the coolest. "Jeff, I'm not really familiar enough with the Kickport in enough different settings to be able to comment, but I will say that it took that 18" bass drum from be-bop to jungle in a heartbeat; I think, though, that it's more obviously effective on some drums than others - i.e. some drums need more help than others. But basically it was there as a favour to Sammy from Kickport who shared the booth with us that year." (Click the picture to view the original one)

OK I got one. It has a stick on single use template to cut a rather large hole. It doesn't fit correctly in the (4" offset) hole on the Regulator. I really like the sound with Superkick/Regulator and I'm not going to cut one up. I have a thing my daughter gave me she uses for scrapbooking that cuts round holes (very cool) It does fit on the pre cut hole on an Evans EQ-something head I have lying around. It can be taken off and on, as long as the hole is big enough. Rubber flange on the inside holds it in place. Wife's birthday tonight so I haven't gotten around to messing with it yet. Will probably try it with the Evans head on the Tempus kit which is set up. I did NOT particularly like this EQ-3 (? or something) so see how it works

OK I put it on the white EQ3 I had lying around, and put it on my Tempus 18x20" bass drum. I did not particularly like the EQ3 on this drum before, it's OK, but a little boingy and papery sounding. The kickport certainly changed the overall character of the head. Probably due to the additional muffling of having it's heavy self attached to the head. It did indeed seem to add a little depth and low end immediately. It has a rubber flange that holds it in place. Roll the flange inside out, and put it through the hole, then roll it back in place and it kind of grips the head and holds it there. So far. It can be taken off and on. As long as you have the right sized hole (5-5.5") Not crazy about the almost $40 price. IMO, if they priced it at about half that, they would sell a million of them. FWIW I found the best price on line through Amazon with the free shipping

WoW!! Thanks for the review. I have been edging a little closer to buying one each time I go to the drum shop. I'm glad you acted as our ginnypig it seems to have some faverable qualities. Well thanks Owen for the BD cutting tip, I was looking for something similar for quite some time now (I can't find a holz cutter here in Canada...). One thing though... as a lot of scrap booking stuff is for girls did your daughter find one that isn't pink? Because I couldn't... Gretsh Renown Maple 10, 12, 14 and 16 toms, 22 bass drum, Yamaha, Spaun and Pork Pie snares. DW 9002 and Iron Cobra Powerglide double pedals. Many cymbals, here it is:

Nooo, it's not pink. Three rings, three cutting things. Depending on which slot you put it on, it cuts on the inside or outside. Line up the slot to the color. Pretty swank. It's like a Spirograph.
