So, i've been preparing to buy a new kit once i get stationed back in america (I've no storage space for one here in japan) and i know what i want - i'm just having such a hard time finding it!! I've been on the prowl across many musician websites with no luck - just wishing i could stumble upon one that allows me to custom order. But i've had my mind on a 7 piece DW with 22" bass, 14" snare, and 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 toms (I'll worry more about depth later!). These are fairly common, which brings me to the topic - i feel like i'm trying to find the right diamond in a stack of diamonds!! with the "right" diamond being the kit that has suspended 14 and 16" toms. Has anybody seen these anywhere? I used to find them all the time when i was content with the set i've got - but just like always, when i'm on the search, it's on the run!! Wishing "rock band" drummers would attempt real drumming to embarrass themselves.

I ran across a purple lacquer DW with 10/12/14/16/22 and matching snare on Dallas Craigslist for $2k. You can always get a 5 or 6 piece kit in sizes you want and then either continue to watch for the others or special order them. In the latter part of 2000 I decided I wanted a set of Gretsch again. I bought a badly rewrapped 22/13/16. About the time I decided to rewrap them myself, I decided to "flesh out" the set, and bought loose drums here and there on the net. By July 4,2001 I had 10/12/13/15/16/22 in turquoise sparkle. A couple of years later I added 8/14/20. There's not another set like it. Just something to consider. I've seen plenty of DW kits with suspended 14" and 16" toms. My DW kit has a suspended 14" and I special ordered my 16" to be floor mounted. "The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously" -Hubert H Humphrey

Definitely a good consideration, the only problem is that i don't know how to wrap, i'd end up with a set looking like clown vomit . Rv - Where did you special order from? Wishing "rock band" drummers would attempt real drumming to embarrass themselves.

Any DW dealer will do this. DW will happily make extra drums provided that you give them the serial number on the inside of the current drums you have first - so they can be matched tonally. If the finish is not a wrap they will insist on having a drum to also get the finish matched perfectly. Any and almost all make drumsets with suspended 14" and 16" toms. DW has strict rules about pricing and how their dealers post on the internet and other advertising. In other words, they generally don't show prices at all for Collectors series, and are not allowed to post their actual out the door price, or at least below a certain dollar amount. Before we get all jumpy about DW, they aren't the only ones who do this. Mapex Tama and Yamaha all do it and others too. It's called MAP pricing. They can sell them for whatever they want, but can't advertise below a certain price point (manufacturers advertised price). It's to keep their dealers from cutting each others throat. Some other lines seem to encourage this, so you can see some crazy low prices on certain things. But most of the upper lines use MAP pricing. You can order whatever you want from DW but have to contact a dealer directly to discuss options and actual pricing.

I re wrapped a set and some singles with material and directions from Precision Drum in New York. It was pretty easy. I am not Mr. Handyman by any stretch of the imagination, but wouldn't hesitate to do this again. It's pretty straightforward. Nothing wrong with having it done, but you can do it yourself. Cutting shells for depth, bearing edges, drilling for lug mounting, is a little different. But wrapping them with the proper adhesive and instructions was easy. I am not a big fan of the double sided tape method, I used 3M contact adhesive

You should be able to find a kit used and add afterwards... Here in Quebec City, there's actually 1 selling for $2400 (22x18 10x8 12x9 14x11 16x13) with hardware! Considering the fact that it's not a big high end market here in Quebec City, I'm sure you could find better prices in the US. edit: I think that I'd buy that kit if the floor toms weren't suspended and short and if the BD was a 20"... (20 for home and 24 for the practice room, that would be cool) Gretsh Renown Maple 10, 12, 14 and 16 toms, 22 bass drum, Yamaha, Spaun and Pork Pie snares. DW 9002 and Iron Cobra Powerglide double pedals. Many cymbals, here it is:

Has anybody heard of special ordering pork pie "little squaler" drums? I talked to the founder on facebook and from what he said all the kits just come in the prescribed sizes - but i've seen people all over the internet with some special ordered little squaler drums. I think i'd actually prefer a pork pie set over DW, as surprising as that may be to most of you. Wishing "rock band" drummers would attempt real drumming to embarrass themselves.

I'd suggest sending him an email with exactly what you want and ask for a quote. Don't make it sound like you are wasting his time. Be straight up. I am interested in having you build me a drum set. I'm sure that is doable with most pork pie kits - but i have some doubts when it comes to the little squealer line due to them being the only pork pie drums made in Taiwan. Wishing "rock band" drummers would attempt real drumming to embarrass themselves.

The squealers are indeed made overseas, and in pre configured kits. Singles may be available. It's possible but probably more trouble than it's worth. Bill Detamore doesn't make these, they are farmed out. while they do say Pork Pie, they aren't quite the same as the ones he makes. edit You can get Squealer 10" and 14" toms as add-ons moneyowen edited on Apr 12, 2012 1:19 PM
