Thank you for putting me right regarding the popularity, or lack of it, of Premier drums over in the USA.
As I think I implied in my first post, it’s all artificial anyway. I don’t think that there is really much to choose between the Ludwigs and Premiers of that time – except, as you say, that Premiers had die-cast hoops, which most would now probably prefer, although, at the time, triple-flange hoops were apparently considered superior.
The kit I mentioned (although I have several other Premiers, including a Resonator kit) is a Premier “54”, as in the catalogue extract that I have embedded. It isn’t far off new condition. The only criticism I have is that the spurs are in a silly position: the bass drum topples if the tomtom is mounted far off the centre. How they made these mistakes, I’ll never know.
Yes, I did know the story about Ringo and the way he single-handedly, and free of charge, made Ludwig the drums of choice, and also effectively consigned British drums to obscurity, worldwide, for several decades. Further to what you say, he is supposed to have seen the Ludwig kit in Grey Oyster Pearl and asked for Premier to provide one of their kits in that colour, which they refused. I don’t know if it is true; a lot of fanciful material gets around, after all. However, if it is true, then Premier will, no doubt, have reflected with some anguish on the wonders of hindsight.
Premier, after several administrations and rescues, do still make drums, although I am unsure if any of them are now made in the UK. They have just re-introduced the Genista range.
