Drums:
--Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz in Copper Sparkle wrap. (18"x14", 12"x8", 14"x14", with a 14"x5" snare that I keep as a backup.)
--Ludwig Acrolite snare drum with P-86 throwoff. (14"x5")

Heads (all Remo except for stock Evans/Gretsch bass reso):
--Bass drum: Clear Pinstripe batter.
--Snare: Coated Ambassador over Hazy Ambassador (with Puresound Custom snares.)
--Toms: Vintage A over Coated Ambassador.

Sticks:
--More recently, Vater Manhattan 7A, wood tip.
--Also Pro-Mark Hot Rods, Regal Tip wood-handled wire brushes, sometimes Vic Firth Steve Gadd wire brushes, and Zildjian Dennis Chambers for the mallet end.

Cymbals:
--14" Zildjian K hi-hats (recently acquired.)
--16" Zildjian K Custom Medium-Thin Dark crash (acquired early summer.)
--18" Dream Vintage Bliss crash/ride.
--20" K Custom Dry Ride
--Occasionally I used an old 18" Zildjian as a brighter crash/ride, often with a chain for sizzle.
--8" and 10" Wuhan splashes.
--I also have an old pair of 14" Zildjian ZBT hi-hats. Before I got my K hi-hats, I used one of the ZBTs as a bottom under a friend's old Paiste Ludwig Standard hi-hat bottom. That combo had a nice quiet foot chick.

Hardware:
--Tama straight stand.
--Pulse boom stand with a Tama boom arm for ride (a Tama clamp flies the Pulse boom arm off the ride stand to hold my crash/ride.)
--PDP hi-hat stand (that I got for $5.)
--Dixon throne.
--Pearl 900 snare stand.
--I recently added a lightweight Yamaha straight stand for mounted tambourine.
--Pearl Powershifter Eliminator pedal.

Etc.:
Depending on the gig, I also use an assortment of tambourines (purple World Percussion for bright sound, rusted Rhythm Tech DST for dry, and another wooden one), Rhythm Tech Hat Trick G2, LP Aspire Cha-Cha cowbell, LP red Jam Block, Toca egg shakers, Moon Gel, and a rolled up pillowcase between the pedal and head for bass muffling. I also have a 14" Toca djembe.

I play for a regular Friday-night worship gig at a local church, and we recently played for a youth conference in Kansas. I also have a small jazz group called 30th Street.

I've gone into far too much detail. Here's a not-so-recent photo. Note the 16" hi-hats - an old Zildjian with a sharp bell on top over a Paiste 101 brass I recently sold.

I have sold so much of my stuff. I almost always play US Gretsch kits. I have a couple from the 1960's to a Broadkaster kit probably 2002 or 03. Right after the Kaman partnership. I usually use Remo coated Emperor batters and coated or clear resonants. Aquarian Superkick II/Regulator combo on most everything. Typicall smaller drumsticks, I have a case of Johnny Rabb ball tip 7a's Im still working through. Also Peter Erskine original model with the little ball tip. I really like those.
I also have a Tempus fiberglass kit I play, and most always with the Tempus snare drums. Either a 5.5 x 14 carbon fiber or the 5x12" fiberglass. The Tempus drums are awesome. I don't use the kit so much mostly due to the somewhat odd sizes (18x20-8x8, 8x10, 14x14) but they sound great. The 5x12" is really a magic little drum. I have a 30 strand Puresound on it. Paul Mason calls it 'the tits' and I agree. The US Gretsch drums usually have "that" sound, to me and people I work for.
Cymbals, I don't have so many. 14" Paiste Dark Energy, 14" Dream Bliss 1st generation, and 15" 60's Zildjiam New Beats with rivets in the bottom cymbal. 17" K Custom Dark Crash, 19" Paiste Dark Energy crash, 18" 1st Gen Dream Bliss crash ride, 16" and 18" Zildjian thin crashes I have had forever. 18" K Custom session ride, 20" K Constantinople thin/hi ride, and (mostly) an old Sabian 22" dry ride. From when they were just "Sabian". magic comes from that as well.
In the past 60 days I have played with 4 different groups, different music. at least 2 different ones in the month coming up. Usually not a lot of money changing hands, but some. I prefer playing music I like, with people I enjoy being with. Rather than the other way around, music I don't like with people I don't particularly like. Which is often the way it is when there is more money involved.

Nope. You are right on target. I feel the same exact way as does my band. We'd rather play free of charge at fun gigs and toil away at some bar for good money. This weekend we played free at a private party on a lake. it was a blast. We pretty much played for food.

I know that photos are usually appreciated.

For the past couple of years I've been playing more bass and hand percussion. This summer I started gigging as a drummer again quite a bit.

I have several kits, but I'll use these for an example.

DW Collector's Series drums with a Ludwig Black Beauty snare.

I've tried a bunch of different heads on this kit. I recently switched to (Remo made) DW heads like the kit originally came with.

I love Vic Firth sticks. My usual choice is the AJ6 model. I'll play 5As if the music requires something slightly heavier, HD4s if I need a particularly light touch.

Cymbals change with my mood. This day I was using all Zildjian Ks.

Hi everyone,

I have seen some beautiful drum sets here but we all come from different places. I personally can't afford a kit right now, but I'm saving on it. Sure I have a practice pad, but i wanted to ask if any of you have experience with virtual drums?
Let's say downloading a free app that simulates drums. What do you think about those if one's access to a real kit is limited?

Thanks

HEY Brooks!
Just saw your video so I just wanted to say that I think it's really great! How long you've been playing for?
If you don't mind me asking how much did your kit set you back roughly?

Thanks

Yo Maniac....just read the piece of your blog about singing and drumming. Yes, it can be difficult but I'm glad to say I'm getting better at it.....mostly better at the singing part but also working on some drum chops while singing.

Part of what's helped me is that for a long time I've been able to play harmonica and drums together so singing was just a natural progression in coordination.

I'm finding my voice and improving and I LOVE IT!! It's a lot of fun and I rarely forget my lyrics. I'm only at three songs right now but also singing some backup stuff.

Harmonies is my toughest obstacle.

Anyway...nice blog....keep up the good work!
