I have a sonor force 2003 now. Looking to upgrade and deem the sonor the gig kit then have a nice set that stays set up in the house. There is a 4pc venice ocdp which I really like. I like the price, the finish and the deep bass drum. The question is, is it a worth while upgrade from what I have now? There is also a new shattered turquoise tama starclassic which I think is stunning. The thing is, it's a little more that I want to pay. So, is it worth twice the price of the ocdp? I also found a ludwig I like. the ocdp http://www.guitarcenter.com/Orange-County-Drums-and-Percussion-4-Piece-Venice-Cherry-Wood-Trans-Shell-Pack-107298010-i2234160.gc the ludwig http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ludwig-Epic-Pro-Beat-5-Piece-Shell-Pack-H73698-i1888620.gc and the tama except they dont have the turquoise listed. It is a performer bb so heres those specs. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Tama-Starclassic-Performer-Bubinga-Birch-4-piece-Shell-560041-i1548542.gc What would you guys do? Any comments or suggestions on the 3 I have listed?

I'm partial to the Tama BB kit over the others. I toyed around with one at Sam Ash and thought it was a real stand-out.

I agree with OldFart. Out of those, I'd like the Tama.

Good luck with the purchase. I have no hands-on experience of any of these. However, if you're prepared to wait a little while for a secondhand kit, maybe you can go into the price bracket that you favour, but pay a lot less.

The Tamas are the class of the field that you've presented.

That's what I'd go with too out of these choices.

(Everyone agreeing on a drum forum? Wow!)

ODCP? No experience and I'm not familiar with Cherry wood. I'm not turned on with the configuration.

Ludwig? Now that's my brand, the Epic series is Birch and Maple and that sound interesting to me. The hardware I'm not sure of, I like the Classic series and those are all maple drums. I'm not so sure you will like the shell pack, big toms are nice BUT very cumbersome and hard to transport plus they take up a lot of stage area.

Tama? I'm not familiar with Bubinga, I've heard good things about it, when combined with Birch that sound interesting. The shell pack is nice and compact and I like that Red sparkle finish. You will be surprised with the nice low tones you can get from 10" and 12" toms, plus the 16" a nice combination. I also like the hardware, it's hard to beat. And die cast hoops, WoW! Most of my hardware is Tama and Gibraltar now.

With these three choices I think your getting more for your money going with Tama. Yes, it cost more, you get what you pay for.

I love the Tama. I really want it. I just don't know if I'll have the funds before it's gone. They also had a few gretsch renown kits for the same price as the tama. I like the turquoise sparkles and black hardware though. Are diecast hoops something I should definitely look for, or is it kind of a preference thing? Because DW's dont have them and they are still held as top notch drums as far as I know.

Diecast hoops are a matter of preference. They're known to dry out the sound compared to triple-flanged hoops.

quick google search answered diecast vs flanged. Another quick quesiton, anyone have experience with acrylic sets? I think they look awesome but do they sound like a**? There is a 8 10 12 16 22 and 14 snare (diecast hoops on the snare) clear acrylic shell pack by crush on ebay for like $1200. That seems kinda cheap for a 6 pc.

sorry for double post: What about Crush in general? Prices seem reasonable. They have a purple sparkle 4 pc bubinga with silver hardware for $1200. Looks pretty kickin.

well, I really like the Tama too (after trying them out) but it does cost more than some of the kits you listed. Have you looked for used kits around your area?

I've done the same thing, but I wanted big sizes (bigger than what I usually use for my practice kit) that weren't available used near me, so I bought an Epic pro beat (which has arrived, I should go get it on Monday - not having a car to carry drums really is annoying). But one could argue that they are not that much of an upgrade from your Sonor Force (not high grade maple and birch in both of those kits).

I hope this helps.

Acrylic drums are not all alike.

Arguably the best, but enigmatic, acrylic maker only just announced they've ceased operations 1st of April - and they're not selling their rights to anyone, or arranging another company take up their design and production process.

See here :

Sorry to see them go.

But some man made substances make excellent drum shells; acrylic being just one.

Ok guys. The Tama was on hold yesterday so I'm pretty sure its gone. The OCDP wasn't as nice as I thought. Its just a different configuration of what I have now, basically. They didn't have anything else I liked. I checked craigslist and found nothing locally that caught my eye. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonor-Session-3pc-Drum-Set-All-Maple-22-Kick-New-for-2012-Transparent-Red-/270897182043?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f12baf55b#ht_1666wt_1188 would that be a step up from my force 2003? The shells are all maple, unlike my force, and I really like the virgin bass drum. I think it looks better and this will not be a gig kit so once I get it up, it stays. I think the plan is that me and my dad (some of you know him, skinhead) will use the Force 2003 as the gig kit for some the not so nice venues. I already have double braced Sonor hardware (well most of it is) so the session would fit right in. I just really dont know what to look for. I dont care about diecast or trip flange. The other option is crush. I dont know much about the company though. Or I hold tight til something pops up.
