Let me open by saying i dont beat the crap out of my cymbals, but i do get excited sometimes and hit a little harder.

I just got the wuhan traditional splash pack and the first thing i noticed was that they are very thin. Are all splashes this thin? I'm not sure how worried i should be to crack them.

Thinness and smallness are the whole point of splashes. Otherwise the sound won't be very splash-like.

The most important thing is mounting. If you clamp it down so that you create a lever arm when you hit the cymbal, a tiny, ultra-thin cymbal will break, for certain. Let it swing freely on a soft mount, so that you never cause it to bend at the middle under the force of the strike, then it should give you good service.

I apply the same principle to all of my cymbals, whatever their size and however thick they are.

The cymbal arms don't really tighten down on them, so there is about a inch and a half of play up and down. I'm definitely excited to have another sound on my kit

I have a 10" A Zildjian I bought nearly 40 years ago. Mount it loosely and beat the crap out of it.

I too have an A Zildjian splash. Its former owner did exactly what I suggested shouldn't be done in my post above. Consequently, it has a nasty crack a quarter of the way around the bell where it meets the cymbal surface.

Welcome to the Wuhan splash pack club! I've had mine for four years now and they've shown no sign of cracking. I don't think I hit too hard, but I'd follow the others' advice and be careful mounting and striking them.

I'm actually using mine as a stacker right now, with the 8" on top of the 10". Give it a try!

Congratulations on getting some drum goodies Smile

Yeah, they're thin. If made thicker, then they'd be categorized as a Chime or a bell - even when manufactured with a typical cymbal profile (and I have one such - with mine, one decent ping and it rings pure bell tone for about 30-odd seconds ... no jive).

Like Paul, I have an old Zildjian splash (8") that is at least 35 years old and saw many years within a dixieland setting where it was used, abused and stood the test and still sounds great.

Read all of the above, then enjoy your new cymbals.

Congratulations on you new purchase,

They are very bright to my ears but whatever suits your kit and genre.
My 8" Zildjian has way more body and tone and very much darker.

I took a moment and listened to the clips, too. Was expecting a bit more trash in 'em, actually. Not a criticism, just my recollection of other examples of the brand.

I would imagine the zildjian is a bit heavier than wuhan's, and that would explain why it does sound different

I think mine are fairly trashy.

... That and a different formulation of their cymbal bronze, no doubt.

No condemnation intended when I say that, but that IS quite what I remember about Wuhans as opposed to Splashes from the Big 3 (Paiste, Sabian, Zildjian).

I've heard very small cymbals which could easily by confused with a Splash, but which were merely diminutive. Those had a pretty nice tone, had an ever so slightly singing wash - not quite ride-like.

And for the life of me, I can't recall the name of a short-term Jass-Rock band with a vocalist who played finger cymbals. Those cymbals had some great tone despite being all of two inches diameter.

I hardly ever play my 10" Wuhan splash alone because it is so trashy. It also usually throws me off to hear how low it sometimes sounds. The 8", on the other hand, has a much nicer high tone to it.

They're definitely much thinner than some of the other splashes I have access to, a 10" Paiste 502 and 10" Stagg DH.

I'm with husker, they are pretty trashy. I guess it had to do with how i mic'd them and the room i was in. The mic was about 3 feet above it pointed straight down on it, and the drums are in my room so the carpet, bed, etc could have changed the sound a bit.
